How successful a credit union is at making money affects its long-term survivability. Earnings may be retained by the credit union, giving a boost to its capital cushion, or be used to deal with problematic loans, potentially making the credit union better able to withstand financial trouble. Obviously, credit unions that are losing money have less ability to do those things.
