How to compare auto insurance

Before you sign on the dotted line, it pays to compare auto insurance based on price and coverage. Here's what you need to look for.

Compare coverage

While it's easy to focus on premiums, they don't tell you everything you need to know. So when you compare auto insurance, you need to make sure that you're looking at policies that offer the same coverage. Insurers typically offer six general types of protection:
  • Bodily injury.
  • Personal property liability.
  • Personal injury protection, or PIP.
  • Collision.
  • Comprehensive.
  • Uninsured motorist.

When you get your quote, pay attention to what's included, and then check with other carriers to see their rates for the same coverage.

Get multiple quotes

The only way to truly compare auto insurance policies is to make sure you get multiple quotes. Ideally, you'll get at least three quotes before you buy. You can maximize your search by looking on the Internet and checking with an agent you trust. It's also a good idea to use an online calculator to get a sense of the market.

Go with a solid company

Finding great coverage at a good price shouldn't be the end of your search. When you compare auto insurance, you also need to make sure you're working with a strong carrier.
