In 1936 Leo and Lillian Goodwin founded Geico during the Great Depression. Initially targeting U.S. military personnel and government employees, the company took the name Government Employees Insurance Co., which was later abbreviated to Geico. Warren Buffett purchased his first shares of Geico stock in 1951. This was followed by his major stock purchase of Geico in 1996, which made Geico a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. In 2008, Geico was reported as the third-largest private auto insurance company by A.M. Best.

Geico auto insurance
Geico offers standard auto insurance coverage including property damage, bodily injury, uninsured motorist, comprehensive, collision and medical payments. It also offers extra coverage like emergency road service, which provides 24-hour assistance, towing, a lockout service and reimbursement for out-of-pocket emergency expenses. Mechanical breakdown insurance by Geico covers mechanical parts of a new car after the warranty has run out, giving customers assurance that their car will stay in working order without large unforeseen costs.
Identity theft protection
Along with several other insurance options, Geico offers identity theft protection. Geico identity theft protection offers daily credit bureau monitoring, credit reports, financial reimbursement up to $25,000, emergency cash, public records monitoring and a personal case manager. Geico has been providing insurance to members of the military since its inception in 1936. Federal employee program
Geico has been supporting and insuring federal employees for more than 60 years. Geico Public Service Awards are given annually to federal employees that have been public advocates.
