American Express® Blue Business Cash Card review
American Express® Blue Business Cash Card: Details and benefits
The Blue Business Cash Card from American Express offers 2 percent cash back on the first $50,000 in purchases you make each year and 1 percent cash back thereafter.
You’ll receive the benefit of extended buying power. With this perk, you can exceed your credit limit to make a large purchase for your business and won’t be charged an over-limit fee. Most importantly, you’ll still earn cash back on the purchase.
This card also offers expense management tools like American Express® Business App and Connect to QuickBooks®. After enrollment, you’ll be able to attach notes and receipts to your transactions and transfer your transaction data into your QuickBooks account.
An introductory 12-month zero percent APR on purchases and balance transfers is offered through this card (14.74 percent – 20.74 percent variable APR thereafter), yet you’ll owe a balance transfer fee of $5 of 3 percent of the amount transferred, whichever is greater. (See Rates & Fees)
Is the Blue Business Cash Card worth it for you?
If you’re a small business owner looking for a flat-rate cash back card, the Blue Business Cash Card may be a good fit.
Businesses within unpredictable industries may benefit most from this card due to its expanded buying power benefit. With this perk, you’ll be able to spend above your credit limit while making a large purchase.
Businesses spending more than $50,000 per year might look at a different business card option, such as The Business Platinum® Card from American Express. This card will earn you 5X Membership Rewards® points on flights and prepaid hotels booked through amextravel.com, a 50% points boost equal to 1.5X points per dollar on eligible purchases of $5,000 or more (up to 1 million additional points per year) and 1X points on all other eligible purchases.
Additionally, if your business frequently travels internationally, be aware of this card’s 2.7 percent foreign transaction fee on purchases made outside of the United States. (See Rates & Fees)
Get the most value from the Blue Business Cash Card
Employee cards are free and receive the same benefits as the main card; all cash back earnings will be applied to the main cardholder’s account. You can set a spending limit for employee cards in your American Express online account or by calling the number on the back of your card.
To utilize the expanded buying power benefit, simply make your purchase — you’ll still receive cash back for it. You’ll need to pay back the amount you spent over your credit limit and can do so in full at the end of your billing cycle.
If you’re interested in using the card’s expense management tools, download the American Express® Business App and enroll in Connect to QuickBooks® via your American Express online account.
Cardholders will receive standard American Express benefits like Global Assist® Hotline, Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance, Extended Warranty and purchase protection. To learn more about these benefits, read American Express’ Benefits Guide.
How much are the Blue Business Cash Card rewards worth?
If your business spends $4,167 a month on the Blue Business Cash Card — effectively spending around $50,000 in 12 months — you’d earn $1,000 in cash back for the year.
If you exceed $50,000 in purchases in a year, you’ll earn 1 percent cash back for every purchase made over the category cap. For example, if your business spends 60,000 in 12 months, the $10,000 you spent over the $50,000 category cap would earn you $100 in cash back rather than $200.
How to redeem rewards
To get the most use out of the Blue Business Cash Card, ensure your business can spend $50,000 in one year. Cash back rewards will be automatically credited to your account in the form of a statement credit after two billing cycles. If your business has a track record of spending much more, look for business cards with higher spending caps.
