Automated teller machines are everywhere, because that’s what we demand. A 2016 Federal Reserve Board report found that 75% of American bank account holders had used an ATM in the past 12 months.
To cater to ATM-loving customers, banks have built vast networks of the machines; there are now more than 100,000 bank-owned ATMs in the U.S. alone, according to PaymentsSource, a publication that analyzes the payment industry.
