Clearcover car insurance review

According to Bankrate’s analysis of Clearcover, drivers who want to save money on their car insurance premiums and who value a digital experience might consider Clearcover. On its website, the insurer advertises savings of up to $1,200 per year, but keep in mind that this will be different for everyone and savings are not guaranteed. Clearcover only writes six-month auto insurance policies, which may be well-suited for some drivers.

A relative newcomer to the insurance scene, Clearcover aims to use AI technology to streamline auto insurance and save customers money in the process. The company earned a 3.0 Bankrate Score for its auto coverage, which indicates that it offers an innovative product and has strong digital tools. However, its lack of availability in some states and absence of third-party ratings held it back from a higher Bankrate Score.

When it comes to car insurance coverage, Clearcover offers the typical options like bodily injury and property damage liability, comprehensive, collision, uninsured/underinsured motorist and personal injury protection. It offers a few types of optional coverage as well, including alternate transportation coverage, which covers the cost of renting a car, taking public transportation or using a rideshare app if your vehicle is in the shop. Rideshare coverage is also available.

Clearcover may be one of the best insurance companies if you are looking for a new and innovative carrier, but it is only available in 20 states. However, the company says it will be expanding into more states in the future.

Clearcover customer satisfaction

Third-party ratings from organizations such as J.D. Power, AM Best and S&P can help potential policyholders gain more insight into how strong an insurance company is in terms of overall customer satisfaction and financial strength. Reviewing these ratings and rankings may help you to determine the best insurance company for your needs. Clearcover was not included in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Auto Insurance or U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction studies. To gain a better sense of the company’s customer satisfaction, you may want to seek out firsthand customer reviews or speak to family and friends who are policyholders.

To note, the company is rated by AM Best as A- (Excellent), which indicates it has a strong track record of being able to meet its claims obligations.

Clearcover auto insurance customer complaints

Another way to gauge the experience you might have as a policyholder is to check an insurer’s complaint index with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The NAIC records customer complaints filed against an insurance company and compares them to an average industry baseline of 1.00. This index indicates whether the insurance company has fewer or more customer complaints recorded than average, which could give you a better idea of the satisfaction of its customers.

The complaint index for Clearcover’s private passenger auto product is higher than average at 3.82, indicating that the company has nearly four times as many complaints expected for a company its size.

Clearcover car insurance cost

At Bankrate, we look at data from Quadrant Information Services to determine average rates. However, rate data for Clearcover is not available. That said, the average cost of car insurance nationwide is $2,542 per year for full coverage, according to Bankrate’s analysis. Minimum coverage car insurance costs $740 per year. This rounds out to about $1,271 for a six-month full coverage car insurance policy and $370 for minimum coverage. Keep in mind that Clearcover only writes six-month auto policies, so knowing the national average cost of a semi-annual policy can be a helpful benchmark.

It’s important to remember, though, that rates can vary significantly based on a number of factors personal to you like the make and model of your vehicle, your driving record and your ZIP code, in addition to other things. As such, it’s likely that your rate will differ from the average national cost of car insurance.

Clearcover car insurance discounts

Clearcover claims to bundle its discounts into its quotes automatically, eliminating the need for a long list of extra discounts you may need to ask an agent about. The website states that costs are lower for cars with certain vehicle safety features and drivers with clean driving records. The company also states that there are discounts for drivers who pay their premiums in full and agree to receive documents electronically. The company also offers a military discount for active members of the armed services, which is up to 25 percent in Louisiana and up to 15 percent in all other states.

Compare Clearcover with other insurers

It can be a challenge to find the right insurance company to fit your unique circumstances. If you're not sure that Clearcover is the right fit, it may be worth considering these alternatives:

Clearcover vs. Lemonade

Lemonade offers an easy-to-use app driven by artificial intelligence that allows you to manage your policy digitally. In addition to auto insurance, Lemonade offers home, renters, condo, pet and life insurance, making it more of a potential one-stop-shop than Clearcover. In addition, Lemonade is a Certified B Corporation, and the company's Giveback program donates excess premiums to charities of policyholders’ choice.

Clearcover vs. State Farm

State Farm is the largest car insurance company by market share in the country and a well-known name in the insurance business. It offers a network of local agents who work one on one with policyholders, and it has an excellent reputation for top-notch customer service. In contrast, Clearcover relies on its digital experience almost exclusively. State Farm also offers a broader selection of insurance lines than Clearcover and is available nationwide.

Clearcover vs. Root

Root may be worth a look as a choice for careful drivers. This insurance company requires all potential policyholders to complete a test drive via a mobile app in order to be offered an insurance quote. Your rates are based entirely on how well you drive, as tracked by Root’s advanced mobile app. Like Clearcover, it relies heavily on its digital experience, and it folds discounts into the premium cost as opposed to listing them separately. Unlike Clearcover, it offers home and renters insurance to drivers insured with Root car insurance.

Is Clearcover a good insurance company?

Clearcover aims to improve industry processes through the use of technology and relies heavily on AI and its insurance app. If you'd prefer to manage your policy digitally, Clearcover insurance might be a good choice for you. The company earned a 3.0 Bankrate Score for its auto insurance, which indicates that it may be worth considering, although you’ll need to be comfortable managing your policy on your smartphone. If you are, Clearcover is likely worth a look. But, if you are more interested in having a designated agent to help you handle your policy, Clearcover may not be the best option. Plus, its high NAIC complaint index could be a red flag.

Its six-month policies may also be a deterrent for some drivers. Six-month policies, compared to annual ones, are reviewed more frequently by your insurance company, which gives them an opportunity to adjust your rate. For some drivers, this could be an excellent way to save some money. But for others, it could provide an opening for your insurance company to raise your rate more often.

What are real-life customers saying about Clearcover?

One of the best ways to get a read on an insurance company is to take a look at what actual policyholders have to say about it. To do so, Bankrate reviewed Clearcover insurance reviews from Reddit, an online discussion forum. Multiple users were satisfied with Clearcover car insurance rates, but the claims process was a pain point for many. The claims process, like the quote process, is extremely individualized — the outcome will depend on the specifics of an accident, what kind of coverage you have and the kind of vehicle you drive, to name just a few.

“Clearcover is convenient and has reasonable rates but they find excuse after excuse not to pay your claim. My wife was involved in a hit and run which was not her fault and they refuse to pay the balance of $1,558.00 still owed to us. They had me take pictures of the damage and used them to come up with a very low estimate of the damage. We were told we could take the vehicle anywhere to be repaired so we went to the dealer. The dealer estimate was almost $2,600.00 higher than theirs. They claim the dealer replaced parts that were not necessary, which they did not, and they said they can tell this by pictures right. They also said the dealer's labor rate was too high and refused to pay but they do not tell you this up front. Stay away from Clearcover they do not care about their customers.”

“I have been using ClearCover for more than a year, and recently I had a hit and run incident with my car on a STOP sign. It was my first time to submit any claim, but since I had comprehensive coverage, I found the process at ClearCover pretty reasonable and fast. Even though the repair body shop messed up my car repair in the first round, Littleton (adjuster) were always responsive and they worked out all the supplementary details for the second round of repair. Overall, I also got 27 days worth of rental car expenses ($30/day), so I would highly recommend them! They saved me at least $100/month on premium alone ($1200/year).”

Methodology

Bankrate Scores methodology

Our 2024 Bankrate Score considers variables our insurance editorial team determined impacts policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These rating factors include a robust assessment of each company’s product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. Each factor was added to a category, and these categories were weighted in a tiered approach to analyze how companies perform in key customer-impacting categories.

Each category was assigned a metric to determine performance, and the weighted sum adds up to a company’s total Bankrate Score — out of 5 points. Our scoring model provides a comprehensive view, indicating when companies excel across several key areas and highlighting where they fall short.

  • Tier 1 (Cost & ratings): To determine how well auto and home insurance companies satisfy these priorities, average quoted premiums from Quadrant Information Services (if available), as well as any of the latest third-party agency ratings from J.D. Power, AM Best, Demotech and the NAIC, were analyzed.
  • Tier 2 (Coverage & savings): We assessed companies’ coverage options and availability to help policyholders find a provider that balances cost with coverage. Additionally, we evaluated each company’s discount options listed on its website.
  • Tier 3 (Support): To encompass the many ways an auto insurance company can support policyholders, we analyzed avenues of customer accessibility along with community support. This analysis incorporated additional financial strength ratings from S&P and Moody’s and factored a company’s corporate sustainability efforts.
