The two-seater Mazda MX-5 is often considered the Japanese interpretation of European sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s. Since its introduction, the car has become a favorite of car enthusiasts, especially with its affordable price point. Affordability translates to its car insurance cost, too. The average cost of car insurance for a Mazda MX-5 with the Miata trim package, also known as the Mazda Miata, is $1,588 per year for full coverage. It’s just slightly under the 2021 national average cost of car insurance, which is $1,674 per year and based on insuring a 2019 Toyota Camry. While price is important, here’s everything else you need to know about insuring a Mazda Miata.

How much does it cost to insure a Mazda Miata?

The national average cost of car insurance in 2021 was $1,674 per year, but in addition to other factors, your vehicle’s make and model impact your car insurance rate. When it comes to vehicles, car insurance companies may consider its cost of repair, including parts, safety features and more. Replacement parts for a Mazda Miata are generally affordable, as most components do not need to be imported, which can contribute to reduced costs in the event of a claim. According to Edmunds, Miata owners will spend an average of $631 on repairs over the first five years of ownership.

The safety features of a vehicle are also important. The Miata has a number of advanced safety features that come standard with newer models, like lane departure alerts and smart city brake support. These features can reduce the chance of an accident, which may contribute to the car’s lower-than-average insurance rates. Keep in mind, though, that sometimes, technology-based safety features can also drive the cost of car insurance up slightly, because these components can cost a lot to replace if damaged or destroyed.

After evaluating these vehicle factors, car insurance companies can determine rates for insuring the car. Below is an estimate of car insurance for the Mazda Miata, which has been calculated on the base model Miata MX-5. If you purchase a higher-end Miata Club or Grand Touring model, the cost of insurance may be more expensive.

Mazda Miata car insurance Average annual premium
Minimum coverage $442
Full coverage $1,588

But keep in mind that while these providers may offer some of the cheapest rates based on our sample driver profile, your exact quote will vary based on your driving history and other factors specific to you.

Average annual premium for full coverage by model

Erie $1,469
Geico $1,289
State Farm $1,402
USAA $1,239

Mazda Miata features that impact insurance costs

Are Miatas expensive to insure? The newer model-year Mazda Miatas come equipped with impressive safety features, which could be a benefit. Because these features reduce the risk and severity of collisions, vehicle thefts and other claims, insurance premiums may be lower depending on the insurer. Below is a list of some Mazda Miata features that might positively impact the cost of car insurance for this make and model:

  • i-Activsense safety technology: New Mazda Miata MX-5 models come with the brand’s signature safety package, which includes adaptive headlights, high beam control, lane departure alerts, smart city brake support and traffic sign recognition.
  • Airbags: The Miata has advanced airbag technology, with front and side impact airbags, as well as seatbelt pretensioners that automatically tighten during a collision.
  • Anti-lock brakes: Anti-lock brakes are a relatively common safety feature, which allows the vehicle’s wheels to spin more efficiently when turning, and reduces the risk of slipping or skidding.

Other car insurance coverage for a Mazda Miata

Mazda Miata owners are required to carry a minimum amount of car insurance in most states, which typically includes personal liability insurance, as well as personal injury protection (PIP) if you live in one of the no-fault states. Driving without the necessary amount of car insurance can have serious consequences, including license suspension.

In addition to liability insurance, many drivers choose to purchase other types of coverage for greater financial protection. Upgrading to a full coverage policy will provide collision and comprehensive coverage, which pays for your vehicle’s repairs after a covered claim. Other optional endorsements include accident forgiveness, which keeps your rate from increasing after your first accident, and new car replacement, which reimburses you for the full cost of a similar Miata if yours gets totaled.

If you lease or finance your Miata, another coverage to consider is gap insurance. If your car is totaled, gap insurance can help pay the difference between your car’s diminished value and the remaining loan balance. This coverage can sometimes be purchased through your lender.

Methodology

Bankrate utilizes Quadrant Information Services to analyze 2021 rates for all ZIP codes and carriers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quoted rates are based on a 40-year-old male and female driver with a clean driving record, good credit and the following full coverage limits:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $500 collision deductible
  • $500 comprehensive deductible

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverages that meet each state’s requirements. Our base profile drivers own a 2019 Mazda MX-5 (Miata trim), commute five days a week and drive 12,000 miles annually.

These are sample rates and should only be used for comparative purposes.
