The Citi ThankYou® Rewards program is similar to other credit card loyalty programs: cardholders earn ThankYou® Points by making purchases, and can redeem those points for travel, gift cards, statement credits and more.

However, there are a few aspects of this rewards program that are both unique and highly valuable to cardholders.

If you have a Citi Rewards+℠ Card or a Citi Rewards+℠ Student Card, for example, Citi will round up any points you earn to the nearest 10 points, on every purchase, with no cap. Travelers with the Citi Premier℠ Card can increase the value of their points by 25% when they redeem them for airfare through the Citi ThankYou® Travel Center, and they can also transfer Citi ThankYou Points to numerous partner travel loyalty programs such as Virgin Atlantic Flying Club or Asia Miles.

Which credit cards earn Citi ThankYou Points?

Citi offers multiple credit cards that earn ThankYou Points, including:

Citi Rewards+ Card and Citi Rewards+ Student Card

Both the Citi Rewards+ Card and the Citi Rewards+ Student Card offer 2x ThankYou Points per dollar on purchases made at supermarkets and gas stations for the first $6,000 in purchases per year, plus 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. This is similar to what you might earn from other top rewards credit cards, but Citi adds an extra perk: your points are rounded up to the nearest 10 points, on every purchase, with no cap.

In other words, if you spend $23 at a gas station, you’ll earn 46 points on your purchase — but Citi will round those 46 points up to 50. If you spend $2 at a vending machine, you’ll earn 2 points that will get rounded up to 10 points.

The Round Up feature is a great way to rack up points, and it makes the Citi Rewards+ Card (or the Citi Rewards+ Student Card) a seriously valuable addition to your wallet.

Citi Premier℠ Card

If you’re a frequent flyer, you’ll also want to consider the Citi Premier Card. This top travel credit card differs from other popular travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card in that it rewards not only travel and dining, but also entertainment — an important component of many vacations, after all!

However, the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Citi Premier Card share one important perk. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, point values increase by 25% when redeemed for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. With the Citi Premier Card, point values increase by 25% when redeemed for airfare through the ThankYou® Travel Center.

Like Chase Sapphire cardholders, Citi Premier cardholders also have the opportunity to transfer points to participating loyalty programs.Current programs and transfer rates include:

  • Asia Miles: 1,000:1,000
  • Avianca LifeMiles: 1,000:1,000
  • Etihad Guest: 1,000:1,000
  • Eva Air: 1,000:1,000
  • Flying Blue: 1,000:1,000
  • Garuda Indonesia: 1,000:1,000
  • JetPrivilege: 1,000:1,000
  • Malaysia Airlines Enrich: 1,000:1,000
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer: 1,000:1,000
  • Qatar Privilege Club: 1,000:1,000
  • Singapore Airlines: 1,000:1,000
  • Thai Royal Orchid Plus: 1,000:1,000
  • TrueBlue: 1,000:800
  • Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles: 1,000:1,000
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: 1,000:1,000

Big-time travel spenders might be better served with a high-annual-fee, high-rewards travel credit card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or The Platinum Card® from American Express — but the Citi Premier Card is an excellent choice for people who take a handful of trips per year and want to reduce the cost of their flights.

How do you redeem ThankYou Points?

There are many ways to redeem ThankYou Points. Cardholders can use points to purchase gift cards, book travel with points or shop with participating online retailers such as Amazon.com. Cardholders can also use ThankYou Points to make charitable donations, make payments on student loans or mortgages and receive cash rewards or statement credits.

Like many credit card rewards programs, ThankYou Points are valued differently depending on how they are redeemed. When you redeem for travel, for example, certain flights are worth more points than others based on itinerary, date, and time of travel. Whether you’re considering redeeming for gift cards, statement credits or flights, make sure to check all of your redemption options to make sure you’re not missing out on a better deal.

What are ThankYou Points worth?

Citi does not assign a specific value to ThankYou Points. The ThankYou Rewards Terms and Conditions state that point redemption value may vary by reward, and that point redemption values can change at any time.

However, Citi also states that the 60,000 bonus points you can earn as a Citi Premier Card member are redeemable for $750 in airfare (on any airline, anytime with no blackout dates) when booked through the ThankYou Travel Center, or $600 in gift cards redeemed at thankyou.com Since points earned on the Premier Card increase by 25% when redeemed for airfare through the ThankYou Travel Center, this suggests that one point is worth one penny — which is right in line with what the other top rewards and travel credit cards are offering.

How can you get the best value from ThankYou Points?

If you want to maximize value, your first step is to use your Citi card for as many purchases as possible — especially if you’re making purchases that earn a points multiplier. Don’t forget that points earned on the Citi Rewards+ and Citi Rewards+ Student cards round up to the nearest 10 points on every purchase, with no cap.

Then, take some time to explore the options available through Citi ThankYou Rewards. Remember, you can use these points to pay down your student loan or your mortgage, as well as book travel, buy gift cards and redeem for statement credits. Compare the available options and look for redemption deals that offer at least a penny per point.

If you have the Citi Premier Card, either use your points to purchase airfare through the ThankYou Travel Center or take advantage of the ability to transfer your points to another rewards program. The 25% point bonus you receive through the ThankYou Travel Center is better than any other redemption rate the rewards program offers, and transferring your points to another travel rewards program can also open up serious savings.
