If you sent just the required minimum payment, for example, it would take nearly a decade to pay off the average U.S. household credit card debt. Using Federal Reserve and census statistics, Bankrate estimated how long it would take to pay off average credit card debts in all 50 states. In each case, we applied the typical monthly minimum: either $25 or 1% of the balance, plus interest carried over from the previous month (whichever is greater).
