The IHG Rewards Club represents some of the largest and most popular hotel chains across the world, including the Holiday Inn brands and Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts.

InterContinental Hotels Group PLC became a standalone company in 2003, but its brands are legendary in the hospitality industry. Whether you frequently stay at Holiday Inn properties or prefer a boutique experience at Hotel Indigo locations, you can rack up the rewards using your IHG Rewards Club membership.

With more than 5,400 properties in 100 countries, it isn’t hard to find an IHG hotel to earn (or spend) your points.

Understand points values and start earning

Earning points with the IHG Rewards Club is simple. You earn 10 points for every dollar you spend at most IHG properties. Extended stay brands, like Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites, net you 5 points for every dollar.

Plus, you can earn additional points through IHG Bonus Points packages when you book directly through the IHG Rewards website at certain hotels on specific dates. These bonus points are also good toward achieving Elite status, which brings additional benefits.

Points values for IHG properties vary, but the average valuation is 0.5 cents per point.

This may not sound like a lot compared to frequent flyer programs like Southwest Rapid Rewards, where points are worth an average of 1.5 cents.

But IHG rewards points are comparable to other hotel chains like Best Western and the Hilton Honors program.

Be aware that your points will expire if you don’t maintain an active account, either spending or earning points, over a 12-month period.

How to redeem IHG Rewards Club points

Easily redeem IHG Rewards Club points online, through the IHG app or by booking stays directly with one of the properties.

You can book hotels for as little as 5,000 per night when IHG runs its annual PointBreaks program. Unfortunately, in 2019, there are no properties in the U.S. available for 5,000 points through the promotion.

Reward Nights typically start at 10,000 points, and you can combine up to 70,000 points to stay free for seven nights, with no blackout dates. You can also combine cash and points – or use your cash to buy more points toward your free stays.

In addition to hotel stays, you can book airline travel or purchase luxury experiences, gift cards and merchandise, including technology from top brands like Bose and Apple.

You can also take advantage of the IHG Rewards Concierge to book experiences or obtain hard-to-find items that may not be part of the regular redemption program.

Feeling altruistic? You can donate your points to IHG’s charity partners within your community or worldwide.

IHG Rewards Club membership tiers

As you stay, spend and earn, you’ll move up through the IHG Rewards Club membership ranks.

Gold Elite, Platinum Elite and Spire Elite benefits include:

  • Priority check-in
  • Extended check-out
  • A welcome amenity
  • In-room spa packages
  • Complimentary downloads on Kindle

Plus, you’ll earn 10 percent, 50 percent and 100 percent bonus points, respectively, with every stay.

To achieve Elite status, you’ll need to accrue qualifying Elite points or nights, earned by staying at IHG properties, spending with select partners, using an IHG Rewards Club credit card or claiming IHG Rewards Club Bonus Packages.

Certain activities, such as point purchases, point transfers and purchases with non-qualifying partners, do not count toward Elite status. Bonus points earned during promotional periods also do not count toward Elite Status.

Use transfer partners to earn and spend rewards

As with many travel rewards programs, IHG has partnered with other popular brands to help members increase their earnings and redemption options.

For instance, you can trade in your IHG points for airline miles through popular frequent flyer programs like JetBlue TrueBlue.

IHG also has many other partnerships to help you ramp up your earnings:

  • Earn up to 10,000 points per meal when you join the IHG Rewards Club Dining program and eat at any of 10,000 partner restaurants nationwide.
  • Buy Apple products through IHG and earn 4 points for every dollar you spend.
  • Book experiences during your vacation through IHG and earn 1,000 bonus points.

Earn even more

IHG also has a few ways to earn points that you won’t find in many other rewards programs.

Jumpstart your membership with 1,000 bonus points by taking a consumer survey. As an IHG Rewards Club member, you’ll continue to earn additional points every time you take a survey through Opinion Check-in,

Finally, you can defer housekeeping services at any IHG property for up to two nights and earn 500 points each night.

Best IHG Rewards Club credit card

The best way, by far, to earn extra IHG rewards points is with an IHG Rewards Club credit card, issued by Chase® Bank.

The best IHG Rewards credit card right now is the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. Earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening, plus an additional 40,000 bonus points after spending a total of $5,000 on purchases within 6 months of account opening

In addition to earning 10 additional points on every dollar for every IHG stay you book with the credit card, you’ll earn 2 points for every gas station, grocery store, and restaurant purchase, and 1 point on all other purchases.

The Traveler and IHG Rewards Club Select credit cards offer similar bonus points, except you’ll get only 5X bonus points for IHG hotel stays.

The Premier rewards just keep coming, though, making this card the best value in the IHG family for frequent travelers.

You’ll get a $100 credit (the full cost) every four years for the Global Entry program and TSA Pre-check, making air travel domestically and across the world faster and more convenient.

How does it compare to other programs?

With more than 5,000 properties worldwide, the IHG Rewards Club offers many benefits for international travelers. The best way to take advantage of all the card has to offer is by obtaining Platinum Elite status, which is included with your IHG Premier credit card.

The IHG rewards program is comparable to many other hotel loyalty programs. The deciding factor to join the program may very well be how often you stay at IHG properties instead of other hotels.

How to join

If you frequently stay at IHG properties, the IHG Rewards Club is a worthwhile additional to your roster of travel rewards cards. You’ll become a member automatically if you carry an IHG Rewards Club credit card.

Otherwise, you can sign up on the IHG rewards website.
