USAA

USAA offers Norfolk drivers cheap average car insurance rates and consistently high-rated customer service. The company is the highest-rated in J.D. Power’s auto insurance study but is not officially ranked because access to its auto insurance is only possible for former and current Armed Forces personnel and qualifying family members. It made our list because Norfolk is home to the world’s largest naval station.

Cheapest car insurance in Norfolk

Norfolk’s average annual rates of $1,499 for full coverage car insurance are lower than the national average cost of $1,674 per year. Depending on your driving record, age and other factors, you may find even lower rates. Bankrate collected data from the best insurance companies in Norfolk and found that five beat the average:

Insurance company Average annual premium for minimum coverage Average annual premium for full coverage
USAA $373 $1,072
Geico $386 $1,331
Travelers $408 $1,010
Mercury $409 $1,317
Erie $427 $1,082

USAA is the cheapest but is only available to military personnel and family. Geico and Travelers have the most discount options for maximum savings. Mercury insurance may have the lowest rates for high-risk drivers who may need an SR-22 or have multiple tickets or previous accidents. Erie’s full coverage car insurance package provides the most value, with several extras included in the price.

Norfolk insurance requirements

Norfolk’s minimum liability coverage requirements are:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage per person: $25,000
  • Bodily injury liability coverage per accident: $50,000
  • Property damage coverage: $20,000

Virginia also requires drivers to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance at the same policy limits as your liability insurance, unless you ask in writing for the limits to be reduced. Virginia also allows drivers to pay a $500 uninsured fee to skip getting car insurance as long as they are willing to attest that they can pay for damages or injuries out of pocket if they cause an accident. However, with the number of quality insurance carriers providing car insurance for less than $500 per year, the concept does not make much financial sense for most people.

Car insurance discounts in Norfolk

Most car insurance companies have a list of discounts available to policyholders. You may be eligible for discounts including:

  • Military: Many companies provide military personnel with car insurance discounts. If you do not see it on the company website, ask.
  • Good student: Young adults face the highest car insurance premiums due to their inexperience driving. A good student discount may help reduce the high cost of coverage.
  • Auto payments: Setting up scheduled automatic payments for your premiums can come with a discount. Best of all, your car insurance bill is one less thing you have to worry about.
  • Bundling: Buying home and car insurance from the same insurance company is one of the best ways to save on coverage. Most carriers provide both homeowners and auto coverage and offer discounts on both.

For the biggest reduction in your auto insurance bill, stack several discounts. Even the smallest discounts can add up to significant savings when you take advantage of several.
