Alexandria insurance requirements

Virginia requires drivers to carry at least a minimum amount of liability insurance. However, drivers can pay a $500 annual fee to drive uninsured at their risk, but would still be financially responsible for damages they may cause in an accident. When you consider you can get minimum coverage for well below $500 per year in Alexandria, the uninsured driver fee likely does not make financial sense. Virginia’s minimum liability coverage requirements are:

  • Bodily injury and death for one person: $25,000
  • Bodily injury and death for two or more persons per accident: $50,000
  • Property damage: $20,000

As mentioned already, the state’s minimums may not be enough coverage. Liability coverage only pays for losses to others and nothing for your vehicle, yourself or your passengers. Your lender or leasing company may require you to have comprehensive and collision coverage, which includes coverage for your vehicle. Insurers in Virginia are also required to offer uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at the same limits as bodily injury coverage. This coverage would help provide for your injury expenses if you are hit by a driver with either no insurance or not enough insurance, however you may reject these coverages in writing.

Car insurance discounts in Alexandria

Average annual full coverage car insurance rates for Alexandria are higher than Virginia’s average rate of $1,304. However, you may be able to save if you qualify for the following discounts:

  • Safe driver: If you do not align with Alexandria statistics of drivers who are more likely to be involved in a crash, you could lower your premiums with a clean and claims-free driving record.
  • Policy bundling: Most insurance companies offer a discount if you bundle more than one type of insurance policy, such as your auto insurance with your home or renters insurance, with them.
  • Good student: Young drivers enrolled in school could catch a break on insurance rates if they can show they are earning good grades.
  • Safety equipment: Newer cars equipped with collision avoidance systems and intelligent airbags may qualify for lower rates

Bundling policies typically offers the most significant savings opportunities, but speak with an agent at your preferred company to see which discounts are available to you. In addition, young adults typically pay the most for coverage and could get helpful discounts if they qualify for good student savings.
