How to choose a free checking account

  1. Read the fine print

Before you sign up for a checking account, make sure it’s truly free by reading through all the information on the sign-up page. You may find some fine print — often in the bottom footnotes — that specifies you need to maintain a set minimum balance in order to avoid a monthly maintenance fee. Make sure you search the bank's website for a Truth in Lending disclosure or a fee schedule. Take the time to review these for information on service fees or other charges.

  2. Compare the perks

With free checking accounts, banks compete on the perks. To find the one that’s best for you, look for benefits you'll find particularly useful, such as:

Understanding checking account rates and fees

If you're struggling to choose among checking accounts, try comparing them against industry averages. The ones we've rounded up here have zero maintenance, overdraft or out-of-network ATM fees, but that's not true of all checking accounts.

  • Monthly service fees: Interest checking accounts often charge a monthly fee if minimum balance requirements aren’t met, and that fee averaged $15.65 in 2025, according to Bankrate’s Checking Account Fee Study. Requirements to avoid this fee vary greatly among banks.
  • ATM fees: The latest average total ATM fee (your own bank’s charges, plus those of the ATM’s owner) is $4.86, Bankrate found. If you commonly use ATMs, it pays to find an account with a large free ATM network — or one that doesn’t charge out-of-network fees and refunds ATM surcharges imposed by other banks.
  • Overdraft fees: The latest average fee charged by banks for overdrawing an account is $26.77, Bankrate found.

After you've made sure a checking account won't take money out of your pocket, look at how much it's putting in. The average interest-bearing checking account earns only 0.17% APY, according to Bankrate data over the past year, and some earn nothing. But other checking accounts, like some featured here, earn a significant APY of 1%, 2% or more.

However, you might need to meet requirements to qualify for a checking account’s interest, such as setting up direct deposit or making debit card purchases.

Keep in mind

Top high-yield savings accounts earn much greater APYs than the average interest-bearing checking account. Consider keeping the bulk of your savings in a savings account, with enough in your checking to cover near-term living expenses such as rent or mortgage, utility bills and groceries.

Research methodology

Bankrate researches over 100 banks, including some of the largest financial institutions, online-only banks, regional banks and credit unions with both open and restrictive membership policies.

To find the best free checking accounts, we rated these institutions on their checking account fees, minimum deposit requirements, ATM network, overdraft policies, APY offerings and more.

The checking accounts on this page are selected based on their monthly maintenance fees, fee-free ATM access, overdraft fees and Bankrate score. Only banks and credit unions with broadly available checking accounts made the list. Learn more about how we choose the best banking products and our methodology for reviewing banks.
