App name: Real-Time Stock Tracker

Publisher: Wei Tang

Price: Free; in-app purchases and upgrades are available

Available on: iPhone, iPad and iPod touch; requires iOS 5.0 or later

What’s it supposed to do? Help hands-on investors keep an eye on how their portfolios are performing, and give them easy access to real-time market data.

Ease of use (3/5): Stock Tracker is easy to navigate. The app gives you a menu of options on the home page. There’s also a smaller set of options across the bottom of the app. From there you can set your personal stock portfolio by syncing the app with your Google or Yahoo portfolios, or you can manually choose your own stocks.

I did run into a few hiccups with the functionality of the app. At one point, I tried tapping a stock in my portfolio in order to bring up its chart, but the app shut down. On a separate occasion, I was checking out the stocks in the default list from the home page and the app froze my phone.

Features (4/5): Stock Tracker updates stocks up to the second, keeping you informed on the ebb and flow of the market. The app also lets you manage multiple portfolios and watch lists, allowing you to keep tabs on current investments and make informed decisions down the road. From your portfolio page, you can see charts of your current investments and set up alerts to notify you when the price of a stock increases or decreases.

Stock Tracker also offers before-hours and after-hours coverage, charts, alerts, watch lists — and, if you’re into virtual currencies, a real-time bitcoin price tracker. The free version of the app does have some ads, but it’s easy to ignore them.

Effectiveness (4/5): If it weren’t for the occasional glitch, Spending Tracker would’ve received a perfect score here. The app allows you to see your portfolio’s performance in real time, as well as keep an eye on other stocks and currencies outside your portfolio. It’s a tremendous tool for active and passive traders who want to stay current with the market.

Value (4/5): Stock Tracker is easy to use and mostly well-made, aside from a few performance hiccups. The real-time quotes separate this app from others like it, and setting up alerts allows you to keep tabs on certain stocks without having to even go into the app. You can tailor the app to your needs by setting up your portfolio and adding alerts to notify you of price hikes or dips.

Verdict (15/20) Solid choice: If you like to have instant access to information on your portfolio or the market in general, this app is a winner. Its real-time updates and list of features separate it from other stock-tracking apps and puts an endless amount of investment information at your fingertips.
