Cheapest car insurance in Michigan for minimum and full coverage

Drivers in the Great Lake State must carry the state's minimum auto insurance coverage requirements, which include liability and personal injury protection (PIP). However, drivers with a car loan or those who want more financial protection for their vehicle often choose full coverage. According to our analysis, Geico averages the cheapest rates in Michigan for full coverage, while USAA typically has the lowest minimum coverage rates.

Bankrate insight

When trying to save on car insurance, it can be easy to want to buy the least amount of coverage. While it’s impossible to purchase less than the state’s minimum coverage requirements, you should still understand what your coverage limits are in case of an accident. Minimum coverage often isn’t enough to cover the extent of expenses from a serious accident. You may consider purchasing higher coverage limits or add-ons to provide more financial protection.

Cheapest car insurance in Michigan for drivers with prior incidents

Your driving record is one of the most influential rating factors carriers use to determine your premium. In Michigan, at-fault accidents and moving violations, such as speeding or a DUI, can drastically increase your rates for three to five years. When one of these incidents occurs, insurance companies typically add a surcharge, which is a type of financial penalty that stays on your insurance history even when you switch carriers, until the appropriate duration is complete.

Cheapest car insurance for young drivers in Michigan

Less experienced drivers are more likely to have an accident and file a claim, which is why younger drivers in Michigan usually pay much higher insurance rates than older, more seasoned drivers. As young adults gain experience and maintain a clean driving record, their rates gradually drop. Rates typically level out by age 25. You may find cheaper car insurance for younger drivers by looking for discounts geared toward teens, like good student discounts.

Cheapest car insurance rates by city in Michigan

Michigan differs from most states because it does not allow insurers to consider your ZIP code when determining rates. Instead, carriers use other territorial rating methods, like counties and custom maps, to account for risk factors related to location. By using the table below, you can see how average rates change by city.

Car insurance discounts in Michigan

One of the most common ways to improve your premium is to consider available discounts when choosing your insurance company. Almost all insurers offer at least a small handful of discounts that can save you a percentage off of all or part of your rate. Although discount options vary from company to company, the following are some that you are likely to see at most carriers.

You might earn a discount if you go for a certain number of years without filing a claim, suggesting that you are a safe driver. Many insurers also offer a discount to drivers who take a defensive driving course. This may also help you avoid points on your license. These courses are generally low-cost and often available online.

Telematics programs are becoming increasingly popular with insurers. They use a mobile app installed on your phone to monitor your driving skills. If you exhibit safe behaviors, you may earn a sizable discount. In some cases, however, unsafe driving could result in an increased premium.

If you are happy with your car insurance company, you may want to consider purchasing your home, condo or renters insurance from them as well. This is called bundling and generally will lead to a small discount on both policies.

Some insurers offer discounts to those who belong to organizations such as alumni groups or to certain companies. Others may offer discounts to those in professions such as teachers, early responders or health care fields.

Michigan's car insurance laws are unique when compared to other states. One of the biggest differences is a mandatory coverage called property protection insurance (PPI). This provides up to $1 million in coverage if your vehicle damages someone else's property within Michigan, such as a fence, building or another person's parked car. However, this only applies inside Michigan. Once you are driving out of state, your policy defaults to the traditional property damage liability coverage, which in Michigan has a minimum requirement of $10,000. Michigan also stands out because drivers can choose from six different PIP coverage levels. These options range from declining PIP altogether to unlimited lifetime medical benefits. The minimum coverage available to purchase is $50,000, but it's only available to qualified drivers. The named insured must be enrolled in Medicaid, and all other household members must have other health or auto policies that cover their accident-related medical expenses.

Bankrate Score

Our 2025 Bankrate Score for auto insurance considers key variables that our insurance editorial team determined impact policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These factors include a robust assessment of each company’s cost of coverage, product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. We grouped these factors into three essential categories — cost and ratings, coverage and savings, and support — which we then weighted in a tiered approach.

Each category was assigned a metric to determine performance, and the weighted sum adds up to a company’s total Bankrate Score — out of 5 points. Our scoring model provides a comprehensive view, indicating when companies excel across several key areas and highlighting where they fall short.

50% Cost & ratings

30% Coverage & savings

20% Support

  • Tier 1 (Cost & ratings): To determine how well auto insurance companies satisfy these priorities, our team analyzed quoted premiums from Quadrant Information Services (if available), as well as any of the latest third-party agency ratings from J.D. Power, AM Best, Demotech and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
  • Tier 2 (Coverage & savings): We assessed companies’ coverage options and availability to help policyholders find a provider that balances cost with coverage. Additionally, we evaluated the discount options listed on each company’s website.
  • Tier 3 (Support): To encompass the many ways an auto insurance company can support policyholders, we analyzed avenues of customer accessibility along with community support. This analysis incorporated additional financial strength ratings from S&P and Moody’s and factored in a company’s corporate sustainability efforts.

Tier scores are unweighted to show the company's true score in each category out of a possible five points.
