Kinecta Federal Credit Union overview

Kinecta Credit Union traces its roots back to 1940, when it was founded by engineers at Hughes Aircraft. As one of the nation’s largest credit unions, Kinecta has 23 branch locations in California and New York, serving over 270,000 member-owners. The company offers a range of financial products, including banking, lending and wealth management services. Its home equity products include:

  • Home equity loans: 20-year loan term, up to $500,000
  • HELOCs: $20,000 to $500,000 for standard pricing and $25,000 to $500,000 for the introductory rate. Both options have a 10-year draw period and a 20-year repayment period.

How Bankrate scored Kinecta Federal Credit Union

Affordability: 4.2 stars

Kinecta scores a 4.2 out of 5 for affordability thanks to its competitive introductory rate and relationship discounts, though its standard rates keep it from scoring even higher.

  • Introductory APR: The 12-month introductory APR on Kinecta’s HELOC is almost a full percentage point below its standard HELOC rate. (Kinecta says the actual rate you receive will be based on your credit score.)
  • APR: Kinecta’s standard APRs are similar to Bankrate’s national averages.
  • Fees: A $195 loan processing fee may be waived if you have a Kinecta account at closing or if you’re not replacing an existing Kinecta home equity loan originated in the previous 12 months.

Availability: 4.4 stars

Kinecta scores a 4.4 for availability because of its wide reach, but its loan minimums and draw requirements limit its flexibility.

  • Licensing: Kinecta is licensed to provide home equity loans and HELOCs in every state except Texas.
  • Credit score: You can qualify for a HELOC or home equity loan from Kinecta with a 680 credit score, but a score of 750 and above will help you secure the best rates.
  • Loan minimum & minimum draw: Kinecta’s loan minimum and minimum draw is $20,000 for its standard-priced HELOC and $25,000 for the HELOC with its promotional rate.

Borrower experience: 4.5 stars

Kinecta scores 4.5 out of 5 for borrower experience due to its strong rate transparency and multiple ways to access support.

  • Rate transparency: Kinecta lists sample home equity loan rates and HELOC rates on its website, along with the credit score and combined loan-to-value ratio needed to get the stated rates. To get a personalized rate, you must contact the credit union.
  • Customer service: You can reach Kinecta by phone at 800-854-9846 or schedule a virtual or branch appointment at one of their California or New York locations. As a Kinecta member, you can also access your accounts through 5,800 shared branches across the country and get help through its 24/7 virtual chat. If you enter the word “agent” and your phone number, the chat quickly connects you to a live person. When a Bankrate staffer tried this feature, the live agent was unable to answer the question, but a loan consultant followed up via email.
  • Convenience: To sign up for membership online, you’ll need to verify your identity with your Social Security number and government-issued ID. You also have to meet eligibility requirements, like being in the immediate family of a Kinecta member, an employee or retiree of a participating company, among other criteria.

A home equity loan or HELOC lets you borrow against the value of your home, while using your house as collateral. How much you can borrow depends on your home’s value and your outstanding mortgage, often expressed as your loan-to-value (LTV) and combined loan-to-value (CLTV) ratios. LTV is the amount of your mortgage compared to your home’s value, while CLTV includes all loans on the property.

If your home is worth $300,000 and you owe $150,000, your LTV is 50 percent. If you take out another $75,000 loan, your CLTV would be 75 percent. Typically, lenders allow you to tap up to 80 to 85 percent of your home’s value — so, in this case, you could borrow up to $105,000 — though some lenders go as high as 90 or 95 percent.

Knowing how much equity you can tap is just a part of the picture. Learn more about how to find the right home equity lender
