CD rates for May 22, 2014

I'm Greg McBride, chief analyst with Bankrate.com, and here is your weekly look at yields on certificates of deposit.

The tumbling yields in the bond market have resulted in some slippage on long-term CD yields, with the average three-year CD falling back to 0.49 percent; the average four-year CD dipping to 0.62 percent; and the average five-year CD yield is now at 0.79 percent.

Furthermore, there has been no progress at all on these longer maturity yields since the beginning of 2014, with the average three-year, four-year and five-year yields all posting the same readings today as they did the first week of January.

Even in an environment where yields are hovering at, or near, record lows, it is still important to shop around for the best possible returns. To find the best yields on all CD maturities, as well as other savings instruments, go to Bankrate.com.
