What is the minimum deposit
required for a jumbo CD?
A
jumbo certificate of deposit normally is for $100,000 or more. FDIC
insurance is limited to $100,000 per ownership category at a
financial institution (not per account), so a jumbo CD is not fully
insured.
Because of the insurance limits, some banks offer
jumbo CDs for amounts less than the $100,000 norm. Some banks offer mini-jumbos
that have $25,000 or $50,000 minimums.
You can shop for jumbos, mini-jumbos, or standard
CDs on Bankrate's
Best Rates page.
Editor's note: In April 2006, FDIC
deposit insurance coverage on retirement accounts
held at banking institutions was raised from $100,000
to $250,000. Non-retirement account FDIC deposit
insurance coverage remains at $100,000.
