Lenders won't tell you if their price is competitive. Our ratings will.
Choosing your mortgage lender is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a homeowner. It shapes what you'll pay in interest and the service you'll get along the way. We rated lenders on both factors, using what real borrowers paid.
87% of U.S. mortgages made from 2022 through 2025 came from a lender we rated, so there's a good chance yours is on our list.
In every Star Rating:
- Members
Price competitiveness
How often a lender's borrowers got an interest rate at or below the median rate for similar loans.
- Members
Amount of overpayment
How much more a lender's borrowers paid than the lowest-cost mortgage offer for a similar borrower and loan, almost always found exclusively through Bankrate's auction.
Customer complaints
How often consumers complain about a lender, and whether they get relief.
Where and what they lend
How many states a lender serves, and how many loan types it offers.
How Bankrate Star Ratings work
We gather data on more than 1,900 lenders, score each one on price and service, and combine those scores into a single rating you can compare.
We gather the data
Our ratings draw on government-mandated lender disclosures, consumer complaints and enforcement actions from federal regulators, and Bankrate's proprietary rate auction results. Only lenders with enough reliable data to judge fairly make the list.
We score every lender
Price refers to the rates borrowers are offered and the fees they'll pay. Service refers to how borrowers are treated, based on borrower complaints and regulatory records. We combine these scores into a single rating.
You search and compare
Look up any lender to see its rating, then compare it against others you're considering. Higher ratings point to lower prices and better service.
Competition creates a better lender experience for you
Every lender gets an Overall Rating, based on what its borrowers actually paid across its business. Lenders that compete for your loan on Bankrate get a Bankrate Rating too, based on the offers they make here, and it's often higher.
The key difference is price. When lenders compete for your loan on Bankrate in real time, their offers tend to beat what borrowers get elsewhere, including from the same lender outside Bankrate.
