A few more details worth knowing
Though these don't affect the star rating, we show them so you have the full picture.
For applicants age 62 and older, we measure two things: whether this lender denies them more often than its own lending patterns would predict after accounting for loan size, income, debt-to-income ratio, and loan type; and whether it lends to them at rates similar to comparable lenders. One of those two measures fell outside the expected range. Credit scores are not available in this dataset, so they are not included in the analysis. Because that variable is held constant across all lenders, it should reduce the extent to which missing credit-score data affects comparisons between them.
We looked at how often a lender's applications end up as closed loans, not counting any that were denied or the applicant withdrew. At this lender, at least 95% did, which might mean quoted terms held up, applicants were well qualified, or both.

What Bankrate's editors think
Membership at SECU isn’t limited to state employees or even Marylanders — anyone can join with a one-time donation to the SECU MD Foundation. Its mortgage business stays regional, though, so it’s mainly an option if you’re buying in or around Maryland, especially with an adjustable-rate mortgage you’d rather not refinance every few years.
Its LoanFlex program lets members reset an ARM’s rate up to five times over the loan’s life, with no appraisal, credit check, underwriting or closing costs. SECU also layers Maryland Mortgage Program down payment and closing cost assistance on top of its own rates for eligible first-time buyers.
About 48% of its 2025 mortgages were priced below comparable loans, and it charges less in added costs than roughly 80% of comparable lenders over eight years — solid, but not the cheapest in the market. It had no origination-related CFPB complaints in 2025, and about 97% of approved loans reach closing.
At a glance
Good for Maryland-area borrowers — membership isn’t restricted to state employees, and most Marylanders qualify to join. Not a good fit for jumbo or out-of-state buyers looking for a nationwide lender, since SECU’s rates and reach stay regional.

I recently refinanced my house with SECU. Mark Considine and his team were extremely professional, helpful, and easy to work with throughout our refinancing process. They helped us secure a very good interest rate for refinancing our home and made everything smooth and stress free. We truly appreciated their guidance, responsiveness, and support. Happy to be a SECU customer!
Mark, Cynthia, and Katina were great to work with. We had an issue with the first house I was supposed to close on due to the seller and the SECUI guided me through the process and easily pivoted when I found a few home to purchase. They were quick to respond, honest, rates were reasonable, and I felt that they had my best interests in mind. Happy to be a SECU customer!

Unbeatable Rates; Exceptional Service, and Seamless Closing Experience
I thoroughly enjoyed working with Mark and Cynthia from SECU. Not only did they offer a rate that no one could beat, but their professionalism and attention to detail truly stood out. Mark was exceptionally professional and precise throughout the process, and Cynthia managed everything seamlessly: coordinating with my realtor, the title and closing companies, the underwriter, and the appraiser. We stayed well ahead of schedule for closing, and it was an absolute pleasure partnering with them.
