High-tech fuel-saving techniques are actually pretty boring. According to a report in the Detroit Free Press, auto experts at a Pew Clean Energy Program conference said that lightweight materials and other subtle improvements would do more to save gas in the coming years than high-tech hybrids or electric cars. Greater use of aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber will help vehicles shed pounds and meet the new federal standard of 54.5 mpg by 2025.
