Auto loan rates were flat this week.
The average rates for 60-month and 48-month new-car loans were unchanged at 4.37 percent and 4.23 percent, respectively.
Used-car loans also were flat. The average rate for 36-month used-car loans stayed parked at 5.01 percent.
High-tech fuel-saving techniques are actually pretty boring. According to a report in the Detroit Free Press, auto experts at a Pew Clean Energy Program conference said that lightweight materials and other subtle improvements would do more to save gas in the coming years than high-tech hybrids or electric cars. Greater use of aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber will help vehicles shed pounds and meet the new federal standard of 54.5 mpg by 2025.
