Verizon Wireless and American Express have teamed up for digital payments.
Verizon customers will be able to set up Serve accounts, a digital platform created by American Express, on the the phone company's mobile phones or tablets, the companies announced Monday.
The service links a customer's bank, debit or credit card account to fund a Serve account, which makes payments or redeem offers from online or from a mobile phone. Customers also receive a prepaid reloadable card that be used wherever American Express is accepted in the U.S.
The partnership is another example of American Express' foray into digital and social media. This summer, the company announced two programs with Facebook. Its "Link, Like, Love" application on the social networking site gives cardholders discounts based on their likes, interests and social connections.
American Express also rolled a program in June allowing cardholders to use rewards points to buy Facebook ads. The program targeted small business owners looking to expand their customer base.
That same month, the company paired up with Foursquare to offer a mobile discount program.
