Budget-friendly Mom’s Day gifts

Like most major holidays, Mother's Day is filled with cliche gifts -- picture frames, flowers, candy, gift shop knickknacks.

Here are some great frugal gift ideas that will wow Mom while keeping you on budget.

Find something at a daily deal site. If you subscribe to daily deal sites such as Groupon and YouSwoop, you'll often find local deals on restaurants, spa services and coupons for local boutiques. With the right deal, maybe you can afford both a brunch for two and a visit to the local salon.

Make digital copies of favorite snapshots. Many moms have boxes and boxes of photos, many of which have no place to go. Do Mom a favor and scan family photos, wedding albums, children's art projects and other notable documents from her past. Then, load them on a thumb drive. Digital copies are easy to share with family members. A thumb drive also is easy to grab and protect in case of fire, flood or disaster.

Take a class together. Your local library, community center and area college probably host cheap classes for the public. If Mom has ever been interested in calligraphy, container gardening or photography, pay for a class or two and offer to go with her. Gifts are often best shared together.

Buy her a service. Many moms would rather put money in the bank or do something special for the kids than treat themselves to something special. Instead of jewelry or flowers, perhaps hire a cleaning service so Mom can sit back and relax. Or, offer to hire a handyman to tackle those nagging projects. Other options could be to call in a gardener, dog groomer or financial specialist.

Take a staycation. Sending the mom in your life to the Bahamas is far beyond most budgets. But perhaps you could give her a weekend off in a local venue, or book a night at a quaint bed-and-breakfast. Other options include a brunch at her favorite restaurant, or a paid visit to her hairdresser or favorite salon. Maybe Mom would enjoy a local theater performance or garden show.
