5 cities with the highest ATM fees

ATM surcharges hit new highs in 2010. The average ATM surcharge -- the fee charged by an ATM owner to a noncustomer -- increased 5 percent, from $2.22 to $2.33. Those increasing surcharges outpaced those decreasing by more than 3-to-1. And more than 99 percent of banks surveyed by Bankrate.com assess the fee.

In its 2010 Checking Study, Bankrate surveyed the five largest banks and five largest thrifts based on deposits in the top 25 U.S. markets.
