Beware of false sales

Grocery stores often feature sale items on the "end caps," or the displays at the end of the aisles. But you won't always save money on these items; they often aren't the best deals in the store, says Consumer Reports' Markovich.

"It's kind of like when you go to a restaurant and they have a list of specials," he says. "Those often aren't a very good deal; they happen to be something the restaurant's trying to get rid of."

Sometimes, the price on such items isn't even reduced. Displays feature signs that say something like "surprisingly low price" to try to lure in shoppers. You should be watching the price, not the glitzy display.
