Whenever you see these base items on sale, buy in bulk and build up a three- to six-month supply, says Strain.

Planning food costs over a longer time horizon will help you save money. And, having enough staples on hand means you can wait until the next sale cycle to replenish your supply instead of paying full price during a quick trip to the grocery store, says Strain.
