Cracked screens and water-logged batteries can signal the end of the road for a cell phone. As much as people rely on their phones for everyday tasks, it can be helpful to have a plan in place for financing a new device should something happen.
With the right credit card, you can gain supplemental cell phone insurance in case your phone is ever stolen, damaged or lost. We outlined a few card options for you to consider that offer solid cell phone coverage benefits, introductory APR offers or both to help you pay off your phone without accruing interest.

Uber Visa Card
The Uber Visa Card offers 4% cash back on dining, 3% on hotel and airfare, 2% on online purchases (including Uber) and 1% on everything else.
As long as you pay your cell phone bill with the card, the Uber Visa offers up to $600 in mobile phone damage, theft or loss per claim. You’ll need to pay a $25 deductible in order to process a claim and can make a maximum of two claims ($1,200) per 12-month period.
You’ll have a 90-day period from the day of the damage, theft or loss to file a claim. To receive the claim form, contact Barclays’ Benefits Administrator.
Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card
Earn 3X points on gas station purchases, dining, flights, hotels and more, including 1X points on everything else with the Wells Fargo Propel.
The Propel’s cell phone protection requires a $25 deductible but covers up to $600 per claim and $1,200 total within a 12-month period. You must pay your monthly cell phone bill with the card in order to qualify. The difference between the Uber Visa and Propel cards is that the Propel doesn’t cover cell phones that have been lost.
Additionally, you’ll receive an introductory 0% APR on purchases and qualifying balance transfers for 12 months (13.99% to 25.99% variable APR thereafter). That means you’ll have one year to pay off your new cell phone without paying anything in interest.
Wells Fargo Platinum card
As a second Wells Fargo card option, the Platinum card offers an 18-month 0% introductory APR (15.49% to 24.99% variable APR thereafter) on purchases and qualifying balance transfers — the longest APR offer available from Wells Fargo.
There’s no rewards structure for this card, but it does offer various travel protections and the same cell phone insurance as the Propel.
U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card
If you’re planning to make a large purchase in the future or have any credit card debt to pay off, the U.S. Bank Visa Platinum offers a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for 18 billing cycles (14.74% – 25.74% variable APR thereafter).
This card’s introductory offer is one of the longest available, but it comes at a price — you won’t earn any rewards. Additionally, you’ll need to pay a 3% balance transfer fee.
The card does offer cell phone protection of up to $600 per claim. Similar to the previous two cards mentioned, you’ll need to pay a $25 deductible and can make up to two claims per 12 months.
To qualify for coverage, simply pay your cell phone bill with the card every month. You’ll be covered for theft, damage or loss related to your phone.
Citi Prestige® Card
Frequent travelers with a hankering for luxury perks will enjoy the Citi Prestige’s 5X points on air travel and restaurants, 3X on hotels and cruise lines and 1X on everything else.
For a whopping $495 annual fee, you’ll have access to benefits like a $250 travel credit every calendar year, VIP lounge access and a complimentary fourth-night hotel stay when you book a minimum of four consecutive nights through ThankYou.com.
As of May 2019, the Citi Prestige offers cell phone theft and damage coverage of up to $1,000 per claim. The coverage extends to up to five eligible cell phones per account and requires you pay a $50 deductible per claim. You can claim up to $1,500 per calendar year.
