Amazon discovers Discover

Discover cardholders have one more way to buy items on Amazon.com: with rewards points.

The credit card issuer on Tuesday unveiled its new pairing with the online retail giant that allows Discover cardholders to pay for Amazon purchases with Cashback Bonus points.

And to kick off the holiday shopping season, cardholders will earn double cash rewards on their Amazon purchases through the end of the year. (Caveat alert: Up to $250 in purchases each month.) Cardholders with a Miles by Discover or Escape credit card will earn double miles.

"We're always looking for new ways to enhance our rewards program, to make it more valuable and convenient for our customers," says Dana Traci, vice president of rewards and product management at Discover.

There's no signing up. Simply use your Discover credit card at checkout. Cardholders can use as many rewards points they want and charge the rest of the purchase to their card. The math is easy too: One Cashback Bonus equals $1.

The partnership is the first of its kind for Discover, where a cardholder can use points to directly pay for purchases from a retailer, Traci says. But she noted the issuer also offers customers the ability to buy gift cards from more than 150 retailers with rewards points.

Chase and American Express also are part of Amazon's Shop With Points program, according to company spokesman Ty Rogers. American Express debuted September of last year, and Chase joined in June.

In a similar retailer-issuer match-up, Citi and Best Buy launched a mobile phone app this summer that allows Citi ThankYou rewards members to redeem rewards points instantly at the electronics store via smartphone.

Looks like this could be a trend…

Do these pairings make it easier to take advantage of your rewards points? Chime in.
