The average annual percentage rate for variable-rate credit cards slipped 3 basis points to 14.49 percent from 14.52 percent, according to Bankrate's latest survey of interest rates. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percentage point. The fixed APR remained at 13.71 percent, where it hasn't budged since late October.
The Federal Reserve reported this week that revolving credit, also known as credit card debt, rose to $801 billion in December from $798.2 billion in November. That marked the fourth straight monthly gain in credit card balances and represented a 4.1 percent increase in the annual rate.
