The average percentage rate, or APR, for variable-rate credit cards increased to 14.55 percent from 14.46 percent last week, a change of 9 basis points, according to Bankrate's latest survey of interest rates. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percentage point.
The fixed rate remained at 13.36 percent, where it has stayed all year.
Discover Financial Services said Monday the rate their credit card holders defaulted fell to a new low last month. The company wrote off $50.8 million as uncollectible in August, down from $54.4 million in the previous month. The percentage of payments that were late by 30 days or more also fell in August and is at the lowest level since the recession began.
