Where to get money for college

Aside from taking out a mortgage, paying for college is likely to be one of the most expensive and confusing decisions you will face.

Some 18 million Americans will attend the 4,200 degree-offering colleges this fall. On average, public college and university students will pay $12,605 for tuition, room and board -- and that's the in-state rate. Head to a private school, and the tuition, room and board tally is a whopping $34,698 -- pizza not included.

Sure, at the end of the process, you'll have a nice shiny diploma to hang on the wall -- and, one hopes, a nice job to make it all worthwhile.

Until then, all you would-be scholars need to understand the dollars.
