How can I rescue my fugitive car?

Dear Terry,
I purchased a car back in 1992.  I made regular payments up until I owed about $3K; I was unable to continue payments. The vehicle has been garaged since 1994.  How do I settle this?

Dear Raul,
If I understand you correctly, you've been hiding a car that the lender probably tried to repossess more than a decade ago.

The original lender probably sold the note to a collection agency years ago, but you should start by contacting the original lender. It won't be an easy process and you may face a payoff greater than what you owed back in 1994. On the other hand, whoever has the note now may be quite happy to settle for less, considering this loan was written off long ago.

Good luck.
