SignalTrac Ultra by Signal Wireless

Cost: $749 for hardware; $99 installation fee; $1-per-day fee for receiving real-time data.

How it works: SignalTrac is installed behind the car's dashboard and radio. By utilizing global positioning satellites and cellular technology, SignalTrac reports the position of a car every five minutes. E-mails are sent to parents when a teen exceeds a parentally determined speed limit.

SmartDriver by SmartDriver

Cost: $495 for purchase. Renting SmartDriver costs $49.95 a month for six months plus a $69 activation fee.

How it works: Plug a SmartDriver black box into a teen's car and it tracks everything from vehicle speed and distance traveled to starts and stops and even how hard a teen is hitting the accelerator. A red light on the black box comes on when a teen drives too aggressively.

To spy on a teen's driving, unplug SmartDriver from the car, plug it into a home computer and read a driving report. SmartDriver records as much as a month's worth of driving information.

SafeForce by Road Safety International Inc.

Cost: $285.

How it works: SafeForce black box tracks and grades teen driving behavior and monitors vehicle locations. An audio warning sounds if a teen drives too fast, corners or brakes too hard or forgets to fasten a seatbelt. Pop a memory card out of SafeForce and plug it into your home computer to display driving reports and graphs.
