Car shipped overseas may elude U.S. tax

Dear Terry,
I want to buy a car and send it to Romania. Do I have to pay taxes on the car if I do not drive it in the United States?
-- Cristina

Dear Cristina,
Sales taxes are assessed by the state in which you register the car. If you buy a car without registering it because you plan to ship it overseas, you likely won't have to pay sales tax. However, there may be import duties and taxes owed on the car in Romania. Check with the company you plan to use to ship the car.
