Headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., Regions was formed by the 1970 merger of First National Bank of Huntsville, First National Bank of Montgomery and Exchange Security Bank of Birmingham. After additional mergers and expansion efforts, Regions now serves personal banking customers in 16 states across the Southeast, Midwest and Texas.

Investing with Regions

Regions acquired Morgan Keegan, an investment bank, in 2001. While Morgan Keegan still operates under its own name, it is officially an extension of Regions, and Regions members have full access to a slate of investment services and wealth management through the company.

Credit cards with Regions

Regions offers its customers two types of rewards credit cards -- one through MasterCard and one through Visa. Neither card has an annual fee, and both have APRs between 12.99 percent and 20.99 percent.

The regional impact of Regions

The bank prides itself on playing a big role in its home state's economy through strong lending practices to consumers and small businesses. In 2008, the bank loaned more than $11 billion to individual consumers and businesses in Alabama.
