Don't buy winter sports gear in December

What not to buy in December
Winter sports goods

In the market for a snowboard or ski clothes? Those and other winter sporting goods are "going to be at regular prices right now," says Andrea Woroch, savings expert with CouponSherpa.com. "You might get a little off with those holiday sales -- but you won't get much savings right now."

Expect better deals: You'll start seeing some deeper discounts in March, Woroch says, "but the best time to get the stuff is in the summer -- you can find deals of up to 75 percent off."

When you buy last year's models out of season, "you're talking about huge, huge savings," she says.

What is on sale: Golf clubs and bicycles are on sale.

This is the season that "not everyone's riding a bike or playing golf," says Woroch. So "you're looking at savings of up to 50 percent."

And you may have more flexibility to negotiate at independent vendors -- especially if you pay cash or buy multiple items, she says.
