As a cultural medium, nothing beats television. It unites disparate populations and provides instant connection over shared experiences. As wonderful as television is, it's very easy to forget to live your own life and instead exist vicariously through the real and imagined exploits playing out on the screen. As addictions go, it's fairly inexpensive, but year after year, the monthly fee can really add up. That's why the winner of the Frugal $ense contest for the month of February, Courtney Heins, says, "Turn it off and take back your life!" Congratulations, Courtney!

Bankrate: How did you
come up with your winning tip? Courtney:
I moved into a new apartment, and when I was hooking up all my utilities I decided
to forego the cable and see how I got a long without it. My parents limited our
TV when we were growing up -- we could only watch 30 minutes a day -- so I was
never a huge TV watcher until I had roommates who liked cable. Bankrate:
It can be sort of addictive. Courtney:
It can be, and it keeps you from doing more worthwhile things. Bankrate:
What do you do instead of watching TV? Courtney:
I'm a musician, so right now I'm in the middle of recording. I also do yoga and
I volunteer at the VA hospital and also send care packages to the troops overseas
through Operation Gratitude. Bankrate:
How did you get started with music? Courtney:
I grew up with music. My dad was a choir director and a music teacher at a local
high school, and most of his side of the family are all musicians or on Broadway,
so I was born into it. |
