Cell phones

  • Cingular Reuse and Recycle, cingular.com/about/recycling, recycles used wireless phones, accessories and batteries from all manufacturers.
  • Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association, ctia.org, lists the recycling programs of cell-phone manufacturers and service providers.
  • Recyclewirelessphones.com, a central site run by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association, explains the ins and outs of recycling and donating wireless phones and accessories.
  • Sprint Project Connect, sprint.com, a wireless phone donation and recycling program, raises money for and supports people with disabilities.
  • Verizon Wireless, verizonwireless.com, collects phones, refurbishes them for reuse and recycles them. Refurbished phones go to victims of domestic violence and nonprofit advocacy agencies.
  • Wireless Foundation's Donate a Phone Program, wirelessfoundation.org, resells most phones and donates the proceeds to various charities. Refurbished phones are also donated to schoolchildren and victims of domestic violence.
  • Nextel, nextelbuyback.com, collects previously used wireless phones at Nextel retail stores or through the Internet. Its program is available only for Nextel customers.

Information sites

  • Earth911.org offers general information on how to recycle everything from mercury to paper to computers.
  • EBay's Rethink Project, eBay.com/rethink, helps consumers and businesses find new uses for computers and electronics as well as responsible ways to recycle unwanted products.
  • FundingFactory.com helps educational and nonprofit organizations reach their fund-raising goals by collecting and recycling empty inkjet and laser cartridges and cell phones to earn points for redemptions.
  • International Association of Electronics Recyclers, iaer.org, provides a searchable directory of members of the electronics recycling industry.
