The delinquency
rate on residential mortgages
for the nation as a whole dropped
slightly in the second quarter
of 2006, despite the fact that
the rate went up in 48 states
and the District of Columbia.
The national average
for the second quarter was pegged
at 4.39 percent, down from 4.41
percent in the first quarter,
but up slightly from 4.34 percent
in the second quarter of 2005.
Only in Louisiana
and Mississippi did the delinquency
rate go down -- and in those
states the drop was so dramatic
that it brought down the national
average. In both of those states
the rate is more than double
the national rate -- a problem
largely associated with the
effects of Hurricane Katrina.
Alabama, also heavily damaged
by Katrina, saw its delinquency
rate rise slightly.
Mississippi has
the highest rate in the country
at 11.36 percent. Hawaii led
the country with the lowest
rate, 1.62 percent.
Below is a list
of the percentage of borrowers
in each state who are delinquent
on their mortgages, along with
break-out lists of the top
five and bottom
five.
