Buddafly, whose real name is Aminata Schmahl, comes from a musical family. Her father was from Senegal and played jazz. Raised in Hamburg, Germany, she developed her musical ability by listening to him play alongside her German mother and sisters.
Buddafly’s twin sister, Safietou Schmahl, also known as Jazz, is the other half of Black Buddafly. From 2000 until 2006, Black Buddafly also included their older sister, Sophie Schmahl. The group was noticed by a producer in 2002 and signed with Def Jam Records in 2005.
Black Buddafly released a pair of singles, “Rock-A-Bye” and “Bad Girl ft. Fabolous,” with Def Jam that had moderate success. The relationship with the label ended in 2007, and a year later the group signed with MBK/J Records. That business relationship lasted two years.
