| Every holiday season, we revisit the prophetic
words of Charles Dickens. No, not the life lessons Ebenezer
Scrooge learned from Marley, Tiny Tim and a couple of time-traveling spirits in
"A Christmas Carol." Instead, many of us find that the holidays offer
the best of times and the worst of times.
But you won't have to struggle with a tale of two (or more) holiday
financial disasters if you follow the advice of some celebrated Christmas characters.
We've taken a look at a dozen seasonal celebrants. Each embodies
a valuable money message to make the days merry and bright. Dickens'
famously transformed Scrooge offers a lesson, of course, but it might not be exactly
what you think. Here's a hint: Think of the businessmen who hit him up for a few
bucks before and after his personal epiphany. His overworked and underpaid clerk
Bob Cratchit has a tip, too.
Naturally, Santa is full of good cheer and good counsel,
as is his devoted elf, Buddy. Another trio of movie characters --
Howard Langston, Kevin McCallister and Susan Walker (an extra cup
of eggnog if you already know their films) -- also provide financial
guidance.
Everybody loves holiday music, and one of the American
songbook's most revered composers, Irving Berlin, penned a piece
that reminds us of good money moves to make this winter. From the
pop charts, we get the holiday financial insight of Elvis, as well
as the lessons learned by an unlucky grandma.
We can't
ignore the Grinch. And while the mean green one had a dog, our four-legged financial
advice this season comes from everyone's favorite beagle, Snoopy.
So, settle back and enjoy our slideshow. And remember,
while these characters are associated with the holidays, at least
momentarily, many of their money management moves also work quite
nicely year-round.
