Consumers pay less in ATM fees this year

Although the prevalence of ATM surcharges and the average fees assessed to nonaccount holders have both increased in the past year, it is the decline in the nonbank ATM fees and the decreased prevalence of the fees that has the biggest effect. Using GAO data on the number of ATMs and nonaccount holder transaction volume, Bankrate.com estimates that consumers will pay nearly $4.2 billion in ATM fees this year, down from an estimated $4.3 billion in 2005.
