While there are tons of deals to be had in stores, they are banking on you to make some sort of an impulse purchase while you're there, says Mark LoCastro, retail expert at DealNews.com. This can easily throw off your budget, so it's best to comparison shop online first.
August is one of the best months for back-to-school shopping, according to LoCastro. "You're getting great deals because of the convergence of back-to-school, as well as for end-of-season clearance sales," so, as long as you "know what you're shopping for, how much it costs and who sells it," all you need to do is open up a few tabs on your computer to find the best prices out there, he says.
Some sites, LoCastro says, even do all the comparison shopping for you to find the best bargains. DealNews, for example, allows you to set up email alerts for when the items you are looking for have a great deal or a coupon that can be applied.
Many sites also offer free shipping during this time or when you spend a certain amount, which can bring even more savings, says LoCastro.
Following the brands you use and the stores you regularly shop at on Facebook and Twitter, as well as signing up on mailing lists, can also net you back-to-school savings.
