The Rover riders

So it's all about the ride, and some muscular cars without dazzling speed attract dozens of celebrity fans: the go-anywhere, indestructible British Land Rovers.

Kevin Costner and Sly Stallone have the safari-bred vehicles, and Bill Murray shows up to Groundhog Day in Punxatawney, Pa., every year in his black Rover.

Robin Williams is on his third Rover -- he's had them since "Mork and Mindy" days -- and Sean Connery keeps a canvas top classic on his Spanish estate.

Queen Elizabeth learned to drive during WWII as a young volunteer in the army and still drives her own stick shift Land Rover when she's at Balmoral, her country estate in Scotland.

Locals accustomed to diving into hedges to get out of her majesty's way say she drives too fast.

Another head of state with a Rover is Fidel Castro, who owns four, including a bullet-riddled Series 1 that he has never publicly explained.

The $85,000 Range Rover is another cult car for celebs, including Demi Moore, Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan, Don Johnson, Mel Gibson, Jack Nicholson and Barry Manilow, but the celeb that really wanted to make the Range Rover his own was Ralph Lauren. He approached the Land Rover North America company and offered to create a Ralph Lauren designer Range Rover. So far, the carmaker has politely refused.

Tennis great Chris Evert expressed it for all car enthusiasts. Her husband Andy Mills collects art. Chris prefers her car. "I'd rather have a Range Rover than a $40,000 painting," she says.
