Long the most popular minivan when it comes to sales, the appeal of the Caravan is in its low price. It offers seating for seven and only moderate power from its standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which delivers just 150 horsepower. An automatic transmission is the only available gearbox, but air-conditioning is standard.
If you check the price list for the Ford Freestar you'll see that there is one with a starting list price of $19,700, but that's a cargo van not suitable for most families. To get the model most people want you have to step up to the SE model, which comes with a less-than-refined 3.9-liter V6 that makes 193 horsepower. The interior and styling are more upscale than other low-priced competitors, but fail to match the more expensive class leaders -- the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.
When it comes to a good mix of features and price, the seven-passenger Kia Sedona is a contender in the affordable minivan segment. The 3.5-liter, 250-horsepower V6 is impressive and there are a lot of extra features you might not expect at this price, like captain's chairs in front and tri-zone air-conditioning controls.
