The compact Lancer adds a new hatchback model for the 2010 model year. It’s available with a choice of four-cylinder engines (one of them turbocharged) and two trim levels: GTS and the performance-oriented Ralliart. In front, Lancer Sportback shares the same general look with the sedan. But in back, an aggressively angled liftback design sets it apart. Lancer Sportback accommodates up to five and with the rear seat folded down, offers up to 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space. A 2.4-liter, 168-horsepower four-cylinder powers front-wheel-drive GTS models. It comes with a five-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission. A 2.0-liter, turbocharged, 237-horsepower four-cylinder boosts power considerably in the all-wheel-drive Ralliart. It’s paired with a six-speed, twin-clutch transmission with steering-wheel paddles. Standard safety features include a driver’s knee airbag and anti-whiplash front head restraints.
