Sharing a ride with another commuter can help you pay for your car by lowering the expense involved in operating it, says Karl Brauer, former editor in chief of auto website Edmunds.com. "Carpooling has benefits on multiple levels from saving gas money and maintenance costs," he says.
Organizing a car pool also can help drive down your car insurance premiums, Brauer says. If your annual mileage drops dramatically, you become a lower accident risk, so your car insurance rates may drop, too -- up to 30 percent in some cases, he says. And you will be helping the environment by cutting down on pollution and harmful gases.
