What to buy in October

With the holidays right around the corner, it's time to start thinking about gift-buying and stocking your pantry. Here's a rundown of the items that you can typically find on sale in October.

The first wave of winter apparel is hitting shelves this month and you can take advantage of that before scarves and mittens become a premium item. The first cold-snap of the year will have everyone running to buy a sweater. Get in before that happens to save 10 to 20 percent.

With retailers scrambling to make space for all of the winter items hitting the shelves, you'll also find summertime items on clearance. Think ahead to what you'll need next summer ... things like sporting goods and bathing suits will all be marked down.

October is the second busiest wedding season of the year. This means all manner of items that you'd find on gift registries will be at a discount. Small kitchen electrics, linens, and tableware can all be found marked down. Remember that you don't have to be buying the items as a wedding gift to take advantage. Buy for yourself or get some early holiday shopping in.

When it comes to the grocery store, now is the time to think about stocking your pantry with anything you might need for your holiday cooking.

Sound Bite, Holden Lewis, Assistant Managing Editor,

"It's important to keep in mind that a lot of your holiday cooking staples, the prices might start rising in November and December. Go through your larder, figure up what you might want to be cooking throughout the holidays and stock up on some of those staples."

Also, keep in mind that the farther your food has to travel to make it to your grocery store shelves, the more you'll have to pay for it. So look for fresh local produce in order to save.
