It’s no secret that we spend a lot of quality time eyeballing our work to-do lists and giving a lot of our energy and our brain power focusing on our jobs.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American works 44 hours per week. So while we find ourselves giving a lot to our job, often times it’s important to notice if our job has given us anything extra in return.

We’re talking about pay raises, which often are discussed anywhere between one or two times a year, during an annual or bi-annual review. In 2019, the average salary increase is slated to be around 3.1 percent, according to data from advisory firm Willis Towers Watson.

In 2018, the federal minimum wage was $7.25 an hour, though some cities gave their employees quite the pay raise. Several cities in California and Seattle, for instance, made the list thanks to high costs of living.
