How Julia Roberts’ net worth was built

Actress Julia Roberts’ career began with a starring role in “Mystic Pizza” (1988), followed by “Steel Magnolias” (1989), but it was her portrayal of a prostitute in “Pretty Woman,” opposite Richard Gere, that made her a star. She went on to make a string of movies through the 1990s and 2000s, including “Erin Brockovich” (2000), which sealed her reputation as a serious actress. As a child, she wanted to be a veterinarian. Instead, she became one of the highest-paid stars in Hollywood, often getting up to $25 million per film.

Roberts’ own film production company, Shoelace Productions, produced “Stepmom,” “Mona Lisa Smile,” and a TV series called “Queens Supreme.” Roberts has had a series of disappointing films since her 2010 movie “Eat Pray Love,” but it hasn’t hurt her bottom line. Her net worth as of March 2017 is $170 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Roberts is returning to the big screen in 2017 in an adaptation of the best-selling book “Wonder,” about a young boy who is bullied because of a facial deformity. Roberts has a starring role as the boy’s supportive mother. She is in the voice cast of the 3-D computer-animated movie “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” coming out in 2017. Roberts also will appear in a TV series “Today Will Be Different,” based on the novel by Maria Semple.

Roberts earned nominations from the Young Artist Awards and Film Independent Spirit Awards for “Mystic Pizza.” She has won three Golden Globe awards: best supporting actress for “Steel Magnolias” (1989), best actress for “Pretty Woman” (1990) and best actress for “Erin Brockovich” (2000), a movie for which she also won the best actress Oscar. Her last Oscar nomination was in 2013 for best supporting actress in “August: Osage County.” That movie also got a Hollywood Film Award. In 2014, she was honored with the Humanitarian Award at the GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) Respect Awards in Los Angeles.
